On the afternoon of November 22, 1963, as radio and television delivered the
first reports of the shooting in Dallas, New York’s evening newspapers rushed
out extra editions. It was into this moment of transition—between broadcast
immediacy and the permanence of print—that LIFE Magazine photographer
Carl Mydans boarded the 6:25 p.m. commuter train from New York City's
Grand Central Terminal to Stamford, Connecticut. Inside, he found a car full of
commuters silently absorbing the headlines: "PRESIDENT DEAD—Shot By Assassin"
and "PRESIDENT SHOT DEAD". Mydans' multi‑image sequence (shown below)
captures the public’s first encounter with the news, revealing the
quiet, collective shock of that evening.
